Understand the whole system.

02 / Location

Foliage lives on light

Keep every live vein and foliage pad exposed to sun and moving air. Dense shaded interiors weaken and can die back.

03 / Watering

Thorough, then breathe

Water fully when the upper particles begin to dry. Constant saturation damages roots; repeated superficial sips leave the centre dry.

04 / Substrate

Drainage with some reserve

Use durable mineral particles and tune water retention to pot, climate and foliage mass. Test drainage before trusting percentages.

05 / Pruning and shaping

Preserve live veins

Plan bends, pruning and deadwood around the flow of living tissue. Do not remove large amounts of foliage and roots in the same operation.

06 / Repotting

Repot only a vigorous tree

Work as spring growth becomes active and avoid washing every root clean. Aftercare requires shelter from harsh wind, not a dark room.

07 / Winter

Never an indoor bonsai

Winter dormancy, sun and air are essential. Protect the container during severe frost, while keeping the foliage outdoors and ventilated.

08 / Warning signs

Brown foliage needs patience

Browning may reflect old damage weeks earlier. Check roots, live veins, mites and water history before cutting or treating.
