Thorough, then slightly dry
Water the complete root ball, then allow the upper substrate to dry. Drought tolerance does not protect fine roots in a tiny pot from total desiccation.
Mineral structure
Use a durable, open mineral mix. In cool wet climates prioritise drainage; in hot exposed sites retain enough water for the shallow root system.
Build with extension growth
Let selected shoots extend to thicken, then cut back. Olive can bud from old wood when vigorous, but severe work needs strong sun and warmth.
Repot when warmth begins
Repot as reliable warmth and active growth return, protecting freshly worked roots from cold nights and harsh wind.
Cool, bright and frost-free
A bright winter around 5–10 °C supports rest without exposing the pot to damaging frost. A warm room demands far more light than a normal window provides.
Separate old leaves from trouble
Some leaf renewal is normal. Broad yellowing, black roots or persistent wetness indicate a root-zone problem; scale insects often hide on twigs.
