02 / Location

A window is often not enough

Give maximum light and stable warmth. Outdoor summer culture helps after gradual acclimatisation; cold drafts and cool nights cause rapid stress.

03 / Watering

Small leaves, sensitive roots

Water thoroughly when the upper layer begins to dry. Avoid both a bone-dry root ball and permanently wet, compact substrate.

04 / Substrate

Fine structure without compaction

Use smaller stable particles that distribute moisture yet retain air. Ensure drainage remains open and never leave the pot standing in water.

05 / Pruning and shaping

Prune only active growth

Shorten extending shoots to refine the crown. Delay heavy pruning when light is weak or after relocation, repotting or leaf loss.

06 / Repotting

Repot during strong warm growth

Work conservatively when temperatures and light support rapid recovery. Protect fine roots from drying throughout the operation.

07 / Winter

Stable warmth and supplemental light

Keep clearly above 15 °C and away from cold glass. In a German winter, strong supplemental light is often needed for healthy growth.

08 / Warning signs

Inspect before changing everything

Leaf drop can follow cold, low light, dry roots, waterlogging or relocation. Check scale insects and spider mites, then change one factor at a time.
