Repotting bonsai

The right moment depends on species, root condition and development—not a recurring calendar date. Prepare the aftercare before touching the roots.

Repotting bonsai
01 / Method

Repotting is root surgery.

A weakened tree usually needs stable light, correct moisture and time—not simultaneous pruning, feeding and repotting.

01

Confirm the reason

Compaction, poor drainage or a root-filled pot can justify repotting. Age alone does not. Never repot merely because spring arrived.

02

Match timing to biology

Temperate deciduous trees are often repotted as buds swell; tropical species recover best during stable warmth and active growth.

03

Secure and recover

Anchor the tree firmly, eliminate large air pockets and water thoroughly. Shelter from harsh wind while maintaining appropriate light.

02 / Triage

Safe sequence

Check the species and season.

Read moisture below the surface.

Stabilise light, temperature and wind.

Change one variable, then observe.
