Pruning bonsai

Pruning is not cosmetic trimming. Decide whether the goal is structure, ramification, light distribution or removal of a genuine defect before opening the shears.

Pruning bonsai
01 / Method

Every cut redistributes energy.

A weakened tree usually needs stable light, correct moisture and time—not simultaneous pruning, feeding and repotting.

01

Separate types of cuts

Shoot pruning manages current growth. Structural pruning removes major branches. Leaf pruning is a specialised technique, never routine maintenance.

02

Let health set the limit

A vigorous tree can close wounds and replace foliage. A weak, recently repotted or stressed tree needs recovery rather than another intervention.

03

Use clean, appropriate tools

Sharp shears reduce crushing. Disinfect between suspect trees, plan large wounds and never cut wire with a pruning edge.

02 / Triage

Safe sequence

Check the species and season.

Read moisture below the surface.

Stabilise light, temperature and wind.

Change one variable, then observe.
